Trapped in the Twentieth Century: Deaf Accessibility Needs an Overhaul
This video tackles the decades-old but under-discussed issue of equity and access for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, specifically centered around the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) enacted on July 26, 1990—which has never been updated. The ADA was signed into law to guarantee disabled communities equal access to opportunities and services we consider basic rights, and yet hasn’t kept up with our evolving technology.. Ahead of the ADA’s 32nd anniversary, accessibility advocates Storm Smith, Warren “Wawa” Snipe, and Sherri Turpin – with the support of CODA star Troy Kotsur – take to Capitol Hill to call for reform and explain ways to reconnect the Deaf community.
