Make Your Community Aware of Accessibility
Have conversations with people you interact with often about accessibility. If you live on campus, it may be a good idea to inform RA’s, and neighbors about deafness so they can make meetings and conversations accessible to you. In the classroom environment, make sure that your professors and TA’s are aware of your deafness so you can have better communication throughout the semester.

Ensure Your Living Space is Accessible
Some schools can provide assistive equipment for your dorm, such as a vibrating alarm clock, flashing light door knocker, or accessible emergency alert system. Before moving in, ask for confirmation that the equipment has been tested and functioning properly. If any of the equipment provided by the school is malfunctioning, make sure to communicate with the disability or housing services to
get this repaired.

Use Technology to Communicate
There are many useful apps that can help Deaf students communicate with university staff and peers when an interpreter is not present. The app used in this video is Otter.al. Remember that these apps may not work for everyone. There are a variety of apps across different platforms that may help you.

Connect with Your College’s Disability Services Center
They can help advocate for you and provide accommodations. They may also be able to refer you to groups of students with similar experiences. The National Deaf Center can help you have an accessible college experience. Visit www.nationaldeafcenter.org for more tips.
