Profoundly Deaf Woman Hears The Sounds of Life With Her Cochlear Implant

When Sue Y. learned she was profoundly deaf, she was devastated. The idea of not hearing people’s voices or not hearing music in its completeness—the high pitches, the low pitches and everything in between—was unimaginable. She came to the realization that hearing these things wasn’t going to be possible if she stayed on the path she was on with hearing aids. They just weren’t working for her. So, when she was offered the option of cochlear implants, she knew she had to go for it.
She knew she had to hear everything that was important to her: the voices of those she loves; music; and all of the sounds of life we take for granted every day. She couldn’t imagine not hearing the leaves under her feet, or not hearing her dog or the people she cares about.
When she finally decided to take the leap of faith and get her cochlear implant, there was a special moment when she knew it had changed her life for the better. It was something so simple—a friend hugged her and whispered in her ear, “I love you.” It was a sound she hadn’t heard since she was a child.
Today, Sue loves being a part of the hearing world and is very happy with the decision she made to get her cochlear implant.

We don’t need to be fixed. Would you “fix” a gay person to make them straight? After all, it would “make their life easier”. It’s a straight/cis world, just like it’s a hearing world. Would you “fix” a brown eyed person, by surgically turning their eye’s blue? Make them fit in? Hearing people are not the default. But you guys make your money this way, right? By “correcting” us? We have our lives, our culture and our pride as human beings. You people will spew whatever misinformation you need to, to suck money out of wallets; by trying to make Deaf people feel lesser than. By making them feel bad about who they are. CI’s are eugenics, and you people are evil.
