My DEAF Life Story

HAPPY DECEMBER!! I’m here to talk about my Deaf Life story! I hope you guys find this interesting information about me!
What is Cochlear Implant?
– A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted neuroprosthetic device to provide a person with moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss a modified sense of sound. CI bypasses the normal acoustic hearing process to replace it with electric signals which directly stimulate the auditory nerve.

I had my right cochlear implant activated in April 2003 and left CI in December 2011 which I had both done at Bristol Children’s Hospital. I felt the same as you with the second cochlear implant and felt lost about it. I’ve been getting used to it for the last 8 years now but I don’t wear it at home due to discomfort. I wear it all the time at the university and I am due to qualify as a nurse in September. I don’t use sign language but I’ve used gestures as a young age. I communicate with my speech as my first language. I also have the memory book of before and after surgery of CI. 😅 I loved hearing your story well done Benny 🎉

Finger spelling in BSL uses both hands
When you spelt "Emmanuel" , you used only 1 hand
Was it ASL?

Did you learn how to speak or sign first? Did you go for speech therapy? Did you have to pay for your second CI or was it covered?

Thank you for sharing! I had right sided cochlear implant surgery on September 6, 2019 and it was activated on October 15, 2019. Just had left sided cochlear implant surgery on October 30, 2020 and it was just activated on November 30, 2020. Both of my cochlear implant surgeries were outpatient and had 2 different surgeons that did my surgeries. I didn't have to stay overnight at the hospital both times, we stayed an extra night at the hotel both times which was right next to the hospital. I am going to the number one place for cochlear implants here and love the doctor and the whole cochlear implant team that I am seeing. I wasn't in too much pain with both cochlear implant surgeries though but I took some pain medicine for the first couple of days after surgery though.
