In our new Dutch film Deaf (#Doof), I play the main role—a successful architect who loses her job simply because she is deaf. No words. No voice. Just silence.

And yet, in that silence, something extraordinary begins.

She doesn’t crumble.
She creates.
She doesn’t chase validation.
She reclaims her worth.

With courage, creativity, and an unexpected ally, she takes back her place and discovers a new project, a new purpose… and a new love that doesn’t need sound to be heard.

🎭 Playing Her Changed Me
For someone who lives to speak, teach, and tell stories, playing a completely silent character was one of the most powerful experiences of my life.

In this role, I had to stay completely silent.
And more than that—I had to learn gebarentaal (sign language).

It was humbling. Beautiful. Challenging.

It reminded me that language is not just sound. It is body. It is presence. It is energy. It is human.

💬 From Language Teacher to Silent Storyteller
As someone who’s spent 20+ years teaching five languages and helping people adapt across cultures, I’ve always believed in the power of communication.

But this role took it deeper.

It aligned with everything I wrote about in my book “32 Brilliant Ways to Survive and Thrive in a New Country”, because sometimes, to survive, you have to find a new way to speak, a new way to be heard, even if the world isn’t listening.
