Community Honors ‘Buggy’ Johnson: A Celebration of Life and Love Amidst Tragedy

Crowds dressed in glitter and rainbow attire marched through the rain-soaked streets of Treme Monday afternoon, celebrating the life of 27-year-old Edwin “Buggy” Johnson Jr. The Walmart stock clerk, known for his warmth and larger-than-life personality, was tragically stabbed to death last month near Lake Catherine, a crime that has left the community in shock.
Johnson, a gay, Black, deaf man, thrived at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities, inspiring those around him with his joyful authenticity. More than 60 friends and strangers gathered to honor him, despite intermittent rain, as they waved handkerchiefs and feathered umbrellas. The second line procession began at Tuba Fats Square and concluded at The Original Nite Cap, the speakeasy where Johnson worked.
His siblings wore hot pink shirts emblazoned with a photo of him and the words “Justice for Buggy Johnson.” They shared fond memories, highlighting his love for animals, favorite foods, and the joy he radiated. “He was the true definition of someone loving who they are,” said his brother Corey, while sister Katelyn added, “And he was living, honey.”
Johnson communicated through sign language and was known for his vibrant spirit. State prosecutors revealed that his iPad was stolen by Nicholas Ortega, who then used it to lure Johnson into a fatal ambush. Police confirmed Ortega has confessed to the crime.
Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Johnson graduated from the Alabama School for the Deaf in 2017 and moved to New Orleans, where he started working at Walmart in 2022. He was also a porter at The Original Nite Cap, collaborating on a sign language workshop with burlesque performer Bella Blue. Friends and co-workers remembered his beaming smile and eagerness to help.
As his family and friends reflected on Johnson’s life, they celebrated the light and love he brought to New Orleans, expressing gratitude for the joy the city brought to him. “New Orleans made him blossom and become who he is,” Katelyn said, as the community came together to honor his memory.
