Becoming Deaf: Marcia’s Story

Marcia Taylor is in the running to get into the 20-strong squad of the NZ Roller Derby team. Roller derby is a huge part of her life but as she rapidly looses her hearing due to a condition called Meniere’s, she fights to stay in the team and to find her identity in her old hearing world and her fast approaching deaf one.

I'm also losing my hearing, but they don't know why for me yet. I definitely understand feeling left out and scared. Thank you for sharing! And I'm so sorry people are judging you for this disability, you are not alone! This video especially should be captioned though, Attitude. I

Not going death but I was born with a hearing deficiency but actually kinda happy because now I have a rlly good, keen eye sight and I can see and ready things that are longer distances away and also I have rlly good reflexes and can understand body language a lot better.

I want to slap that scout around so hard. So, so hard. Because she is deaf??? You know, in this decision one should ask the other players first, because if they are fine playing with a deaf woman, then what are they to tell them it is 'too much of a hassle'?

I admire Meat Train from the bottom of my derby heart. I want to thank her for her story, it reminds me of my own derby career while being Autistic. I know the fear of being left out.

What happened to her

Is there a Deaf community in their area? Could help to improve your signing skills and help with the social situation.
@slowfire2
I'm sure that just under 30 minutes probably barely scratches the surface of what she is going through. Thank you Marcia for allowing us into your world even for these precious moments and for your bravery in standing up to discrimination. Thank you Attitude for once again taking the time to help someone share their story so others can find inspiration, hope and sense of community. ❤️

Really enjoyed this film. When I saw it was 28 minutes long – I thought…I'd just give it 2-3 minutes and then move on…but lots of it resonated with my life and the 28 minutes was gone before I had even realised…
