There is a group of Americans who grew up in the US but don’t speak English. Instead, they communicate using American Sign Language (ASL), a language entirely different from English with its own grammar, syntax, and cultural significance. In this video, I dive into the fascinating world of ASL by exploring different aspects of Deaf culture. I start my journey at a Starbucks where I learn how Deaf customers order their drinks, demonstrating how everyday interactions are adapted for the Deaf community. I also visit a pizzeria where the staff and customers use ASL, showing how this language seamlessly integrates into daily life. Later, I attend a lively Deaf party where ASL is the language of choice, and I witness firsthand how communication thrives in this vibrant social environment. Join me as I uncover the unique and dynamic experiences of the Deaf community, challenging misconceptions and celebrating the richness of this beautiful language.

  • At the end where the guys talks about people seeing them as less intellectual makes me feel sad because i feel asl should be taught in its own class in all schools because i feel it should be recognized just as important as teaching English class atleast in middle school i feel this way as a hearing person and i meet alot of interesting people if the language is taught barrier is dropped much lower even if you are not fluent atleast you can make friends and possibly become more fluent having friends deaf or hearing we all share these life experiences but together would be a much more beautiful being able to speak more clearly together

  • Thank you so much for learning ASL. You’ve reignited by passion for it. Thank you so much. Please make more content like this.

  • its weird watching a video without any speaking but its extremely interesing

  • Shout out to my former coworker Anna Kelly wherever you are. Both of her roommates were deaf and she taught me a bit of sign language

  • You are a prodigy you know that. Yashar Koach Ari!

  • I love how everyone, or well, most everyone who goes into a quiet place will maintain the quiet to some degree. You'll whisper or talk quietly, and try to set things down more gently. My guess is it's an instinct to keep us from drawing attention to ourselves. It maybe be ingrained from our days of being prey in the woods and plains. It could just be a social setting in our brain, too. Who knows, humans are weird. Either way, this video was fantastic and that halo girl was definitely flirting with you. Not implying you were flirting back, I don't even think you clocked it, but either way, it was a fun watch. It's so fascinating to see a visual language in that setting and using a totally different sense to communicate. (Well, I guess we have writing that does that too, but still, ASL and other sign languages are special in a way.)

  • I'm not sure why but ASL reminds me heavily of Japanese based on how people speak to each other

  • Bro is collecting languages like Pokémon cards

  • Just a suggestion, perhaps update your incredible vids with an ASL interpreter in the corner or a link for the hearing impaired & add one to your team. You are a good soul brother, each one teach one.🙂

  • My head was titled the whole time. I don't know why!

  • 9:20 because of the wide angle camera, xiaoma's face looks so funny 🤣

  • Bro looks like Will Smith. 😀

  • How the hell do you whisper a secret in ASL

  • Everyone should communicate this way, so much calmer, less noise pollution, and more thoughtful responses instead of thoughtless gossipy BS.

  • 11:20 i love how hes just silently laughing instinctively

  • Your linguistics is AI level. Can’t be learned must be installed.

  • And there I am afraid to learn languages because I even stuck at the grammar of my own languages.

  • Omg just watched this documentary. Have you seen it at all https://youtu.be/m-gIp9CDFtM?si=TSfLYBSssiVKtS3o it kinda makes me wanna learn sign language

  • This is fun! I’ve seen many of your videos over the years and have seen how you take on new languages. I was wondering if you’d ever try a sign language. I’m glad to see you have!
You mentioned it is by far one of the most interesting and favorite languages you have learned so far. I’m curious, how does the difficulty compare to all the other spoken languages you’ve learned so far?

  • I am learning ASL as well! When I was a baby/toddler I actually learned it, and could hold up a conversation, but I stopped showing interest in it and forgot about. I'm learning it again because I've always loved it and found it so beautiful. Anyways, I find it so crazy how different signing can be depending on where you are! I'm on the west coast and I kept seeing signs in this video that were different from the signs I learned for those words. It's really amazing!

  • The message at the end is so sweet and heartwarming, it made me tear up a bit. Then i started dying when your aunt went off!

    Great and inspiring video!

  • im the 91 thousandth like!!!

  • I want to watch it but the angle of the angle of the camera is hurting my head

  • for full on experience, I had to mute the video

  • And the deaf restaurant went up in a roar at your name.

  • Deaf jokes on the menu is pretty hilarious

  • This type of fluency with hand signals would be useful for almost anybody I think.

  • At 20:55 when he talks about sign language being perceived as intellectually inferior, it reminds me of how some people will think a person who only speaks a little English is stupid. I always thought, "This person speaks their native language and a little English, so they already know more languages than I do." And it at least looks to me like learning sign language is learning both a language and choreographed dance at the same time, so that's even more impressive.

  • I grew up with a deaf cousin. We would play sports together and win because we could communicate without others knowing what we said. We have lost touch and I have lost the skills as it was over 40 yrs ago.

  • The way his entire expression changed and his face lit up is so beautiful.
I know many people say "Oh he only learns a little bit for attention" – but this video (and so many others of yours) are proof that is not the case at all. You are truly a natural at learning languages, and it's amazing to me, and an inspiration to get out of my comfort zone and go learn more. Thanks Xioamanyc ♥

  • omg this is the first xiaomanyc video that I don't even need the subtitles for this is wild. I'm not a native speaker but I studied a lot in high school and college and the signs they are using are pretty common

  • The only time a Starbucks employee can get a name right

  • Already loved your videos, they're one reason why I started learning multiple languages… but this one hits different, I may have never watched anything this inspiring on Youtube. So cool that there is a whole university for deaf people in the US, with cafés and restaurants too! Wish there was one here in France, it would be the perfect place to learn French SL for an adult beginner. Bravo et merci pour tout ce que vous faites !

  • I'm also learning asl rn!! people all seems sooo friendy, can't wait to use it in real lifehhha

  • no disrespect but watching a deaf party kinda felt like watching my gf play the sims.😂

  • I really can't with these angels LOLL

  • I took ASL for 2 years, and Im really slow with it and so the only thing I can do now is sign the alphabet and 1-100

  • Years ago, my husband and I went to a party hosted by a deaf couple. Almost all of the couples were deaf, but many of their children were hearing and were using fairly inappropriate conversation and screaming profanities. I finally said, "You do realize that not every adult present is hearing impaired, right?" It got very quiet after that.😄

  • I love sign language, I really wanna continue learning, it's so fascinating and the third language I really wanna focus on. It really should be taught in every school… at least as an option and some basics.
2:30 Haha what? It's cause people aren't speaking. Was it a joke?
Are you being extra quiet for the video or isn't it normal to speak more as you learn? I think it would help yourself.
Also surprised you're not mentioning mute people as much.

  • I don’t think having deaf police is good

  • I may be hated for saying this, but the deaf community is very judgmental and self hating. I have never met a community that hates each other as much as the death do, because if any of them get ahead, the rest do not cheer them on, but they try to bring them down.Maybe somebody can explain this to me why?

  • Looks to me like they're doing some jujutsu 😭😭😭😭

  • Dude you just got me fall in love with ASL
