Deaf in America | Nightly Films

Millions of Americans are Deaf or hard of hearing, and many rely on American Sign Language or ASL to communicate. Nightly Films follows students and teachers at Connecticut’s American School for the Deaf, where ASL was born, as well as a midtown Manhattan school that’s teaching ASL to hearing students — to learn its vibrant history and rich culture, bridge the gap to create a more inclusive world — and reveal what it’s really like being Deaf in America.

What’s happening, however, the signer isn’t signing in English as we read it. The translator is putting it in English. It’s confusing to follow the signs and hear the translation.
@HollyBlair-wf3px
This is such a beautiful school I wish many cities would do this definitely need more exposure ❤

@matthewbaker70
Why can’t some teacher know sign language?
@68Bugs
Deaf people are wonderful.
@jonasbrothersrockist
Why is a news organization like NBC News relying on auto captions for this video? It should be open captioned, first, but if not that, at least add ACCURATE captions.
@rebeccaforstner1849
Congratulations on her saying deaf hello to my daughter
@KemlyCoraLafond-ws8gh
The caption is there, if you took the time to click on the CC you would have seen it

@samgaza8818
I still can’t believe that ASL is not taught in mainstream schools as a language option.
@martinsutherland5502
I took 2 semesters of ASL and was lucky enough to have a Deaf roommate. Since then I haven’t been able to practice and need a refresher, and maybe get involved with the Deaf community here.
@robiny.4395
Hi friend I'm hearing impaired boy 👦
@AbhaySingh-l6h
Beautiful video!
@chrisliebe346
Put accurate, human-written captions on this video, please. It's literally a documentary about being Deaf.
@Rainyembers
Deaf is culture and sign language is beautiful. Hearing must to learn sign language. It is very important. Hearing must respect the deaf and sign language. God possible to makes human the deaf that God responsible own the deaf and everything but man and woman never make deaf and everything. Sign language forever .
@selvadsouza6379
It's honestly disgraceful that the station couldn't be bothered to put accurate captions on this video.
@mia-saraking5479

@jaygames1879
Will it be offensive to go to DSL College to learn sign language even if you speak?
@RachelleBrown-g3c
There is a huge irony in not having captions on this video, given the fact this is specifically a film about being Deaf/HoH and even within it you show that there are people who did not have ASL until much later in their lives — meaning you are already aware that this is inaccessible to anyone who cannot hear the spoken words and who cannot read the sign language of the people featured. Please fix that. Autogenerated captions are insufficient.
@ladypoetess
Wonderful
